What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a new approach to skin resurfacing that stimulates
the production of new skin cells and collagen. Microdermabrasion is a
non-surgical treatment that does not require anesthetic. Treatments take place in our Ottawa clinic and take
45-60 minutes.
The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, is composed of dead
cells. As we age, this layer becomes thicker and more pronounced. One of the
most popular and effective methods of removing that dead skin layer is by
Microdermabrasion.
Diamond Crystal Free Microdermabrasion
Diamond Crystal Free Microdermabrasion is a new way to exfoliate the skin
with the use of a very fine diamond tip that gently sands down the keratin
layer of the skin.
Regular removal of the keratin layer can improve the appearance of:
- Small acne scars
- Fine lines
- Dull skin
- Hyperpigmentation
starts.
Contraindications
There is no down-time with Microdermabrasion. The patient is able to
resume normal activities immediately. Although one treatment yields
excellent results, we have found Microdermabrasion works more effectively
when performed as a series of four to six treatments administered two weeks
apart.
Exceptional results can be seen if alternating Microdermabrasion with
Laser Genesis (Laser Facial) at weekly intervals. This combines the benefits
of exfoliation by Microdermabrasion to be combined with the healing effects
of laser light therapy.
We always encourage our patients to use cosmeceutical skin care products
as part of their treatment series. Our esthetician, Nissa, will be able to
help you with which skin care products are best for you.
After the Microdermabrasion treatment
- An Anti-Redness mask, a rehydrating toner, moisturizer and sunscreen
is applied to your skin prior to leaving the office.
- Some redness and the sensation of having mild sunburn is expected
after the treatment. These are very normal sensations which are short
lived.
- A high quality sun screen is recommended following treatment.
- Avoid AHAs, Glycolic Acid products and skin exfoliation scrubs for
72 hours both before and after treatment.
- Avoid full face make up, i.e. liquid foundations or pressed powder
foundations for 24 hours after the treatment. Eye make-up, lipstick etc.
may be applied.
Please be advised, raised or deeply pitted skin areas (possibly from old
severe acne scars) and darker pigmented areas will require multiple
treatments. Microdermabrasion also can not be expected to remove tattoos.
Microdermabrasion is not recommended for people who are on Acutane or who
have taken this acne drug within the past six months. It is not for those
who have active keloids, undiagnosed lesions, recent herpes simplex (cold
sores), warts, active weeping acne (stages 3 to 4), active rosacea, unstable
diabetes or auto-immune system disorders.
